The Hand of Heaven appears in many different ways but it always comes with touching and inspiring moments – an instant from life’s jigsaw puzzle. In this particular case a group of friends decided spontaneously and enthusiastically to do a short hike in the mountains after successfully carrying out some interesting and inspiring vegie-activism in the form of a curious meeting (expect some special material on this soon). More precisely still, two girls from the little group, in a conversation about the relationship between human civilisation and the world around us, about egotism and altruism, about symbiosis and exploitation… passed along the very ridge of the Old Mountain (Stara Planina in Bulgarian) range – the dividing line where a person’s one foot treads in Northern Bulgaria and the other in the South. The date of the expedition in question, on the winter route of the eco-trail from Beklemeto to Kozya Stena (Goat’s Wall) Mountain Hut, is particularly emblematic: the 6th of September, The Day of Bulgarian Unification. What better than to wait for the mists of human relations to lift, for you to see that all is unity? Just as, despite severe and seemingly unending periods of darkness, Bulgaria today is unified, united (almost) and alive, perhaps preparing for a new ascent!

The Unification of Bulgaria (1885) is a reaction to the Berlin Treaty (1878), under which Bulgaria is divided into two separate states, just like years later Germany (Berlin) is separated.
